Macondo (2020) | VR Video, 2channel sound, 9min 47sec
The background of “Macondo”* is the Korea National University of Arts' School of Visual Arts (Imun-dong, Seoul, S.Korea), which was previously the building that housed the Central Intelligence Agency/Agency for National Security Planning (now the National Intelligence Service) during the dictatorship. This building, currently serving as a living space for students, was once a site where someone was tortured. The virtual space, created using 3D spatial data of the building, is a site layered with various voices related to its history. It resonates with adapted testimonies and interviews of those who were tortured by state power during the dictatorship, including the Central Intelligence Agency office in Imun-dong, as well as whispers reciting the final passages of Gabriel García Márquez's novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude”.
* “Macondo” is an imaginary village presented as the background of the Nobel Prize-winning novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude” (1967) by Gabriel García Márquez. In the novel, "Macondo” represents a place where the history of the Latin American continent, which was dominated by the West, is condensed and sublimated.

“마콘도”*의 장소적 배경은 서울 이문동의 한국예술종합학교 미술원이자, 독재정권 시절 중앙정보부/국가안전기획부(현 국가정보원)가 위치했던 건물이다. 현재 학생들의 생활공간인 이 건물은 과거 누군가가 고문을 받기도 했던 장소였다. 건물의 3D 공간데이터를 활용해 생성한 가상공간은, 건물의 역사와 관련된 여러 목소리들이 적층된 장소이다. 과거 이문동 중앙정보부 분실을 비롯해 독재정권 시절 국가 권력에 의해 고문을 받은 이들의 진술과 인터뷰를 각색한 목소리, 그리고 소설 “백 년 동안의 고독”의 마지막 부분을 읊조리는 속삭임이 함께 울려 퍼진다.
* “마콘도”는 콜롬비아 작가 가브리엘 가르시아 마르케스(Gabriel García Márquez)의 노벨문학상수상작인 “백 년 동안의 고독(Cien Años de Soledad)”(1967)에서 배경으로 등장하는 가상의 마을이다. 이는 서구에 의해 지배되었던 중남미 대륙의 역사가 소설로 응집 및 승화되어 있는 상상의 공간이다.
